Unifying Concept:

METEOGRAMS

Earlier you studied and learned how to read surface maps. These maps give you a synoptic view of a specific region such as the southeastern United States or a complete national perspective.

Explore the METEOGRAM by clicking on the link below. This specialized chart gives a 25 hour weather history of a specific place.

Meteogram info

By studying the meteogram we can observe the following weather characteristics.

  • Temperature
  • Depoint
  • Cloud cover
  • Time of observation in UTC/most recent is on the right
  • Windspeed and direction
  • barometic pressure
  • precipitation in inches
  • snow cover
  • visibility
  • cloud level

Look at meteogram of the Dallas,Texas area. Explain the type of weather that has been occuring. As part of your explanation make sure to include the following points:

  • Pressure tendencies
  • Temperature (warmest and coldest during time period)
  • Cloudiness
  • Precipitaion
  • Influence of a High/Low pressure system

Look at the wind direction lines on the station model to give you a better understanding as to the type of pressure system the station may be under. Do they tend to move in a clockwise/counterclockwise direction when viewed from left to right? As you continue your analysis determine if a frontal system passed through the area. To help you in this endeavor, look for wind shifts, precipitation, pressure changes, and temperature changes. Then decide if the frontal passage was warm or cold. Also be aware that there may not have been a frontal passage.
