Approximately 100 M years ago the rocks in this area began moving. The Keystone thrust which occurred approximately 65 M years ago is probably the most significant geological feature of Red Rock Canyon.
It is believed that the Earth's crustal plates collided with such tremendous amount of force that, the older dark gray Paleozoic limestones and dolomites of the La Madre Mountains were thrusted over the top of the younger Mesozoic Aztec Sandstone. |
