Held together by the interaction of calcium carbonate, iron oxide, and water, these massive Sahara Desert-like dunes (Aztec Sandstone) stretch for hundreds of miles. They can also be found in Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park approximately 50 miles to the north.
The colors of yellow, white, tans, and reds of the Aztec Sandstone is in sharp contrast to the gray limestone of La Madre Mountains. These colors are thought to be produced by groundwater percolating through the sand and leaching out the iron oxide.
