Building and Using Telescopes

(1) There are two sites which you can use a robotic telescope. One is the Bradford Robotic Telescope located in Yorkshire, England and the other is located at the University of California in Santa Barbara.

These telescopes are designed for you to submit a job request to have the telescope photograph a part of the sky for you. Once your job has been acted upon, the site will notify you via e-mail that it is ready and will then require you to download the image to your computer. This process of obtaining your image may take several weeks (or months) depending upon the weather (especially England) and / or position in line.

(2) You might use this virtual telescope(really KOOL!).

(3) Use another virtual telescope.(also Kool)

(4) Listen to the Stephen Hawking's speech. In the speech he mentioned that the world's population is doubling every forty years. Write a 400-500 word essay discussing the implications/consequences for the world if this increase in population continues unchecked. You may also want to visit Professor Hawking's web site.

(5) Based upon some of the information in in Professor Hawking's speech, download this STELLA population model. Follow the directions and run the model. The run time software is available from High Performance Systems Corporation at no charge. Make sure the software is saved in a convenient area of your computer. You will need it to run other models, some very involved during this course.

Once downloaded, the model will need to be unstuffed. The software to unstuff this .sit model can be found at Aladdin Systems Inc. Make sure you download the program appropriate to your computer.

The procedure for viewing the model is as follows if your browser does not automatically unstuff it.:

  • Locate pop.stm.sit in your download folder. If you can not find it, use the find file command of your computer.
  • Once located, double click on the name. If you have the Aladdin Systems Inc. Expander program on your computer, the file will automatically expand.
  • Once the program has expanded, double click on the name pop.stm and the file will automatically open in the STELLA Run-time software program, provided that STELLA is installed on your computer.
