Quicktime VRML (Virtual Reality Markup Language) can be an excellent method to provide students with experiences they may not normally be able to acquire. There are a number of programs that can help instructors in providing the interactivity students require. As an example, Bryce 4 software can help geology students and teachers go where most students and teachers have never gone to before. Bryce software is a 3D modeling application. Although the software produces very realistic 3D objects, it excels at producing 3D landscape portraits.
The following QTVR examples were constructed using USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data, and Bryce 4 software. To experience these examples, your computer must have quicktime installed-the software can be obtained at the apple.com website.
As you explore these images, notice the differences in the lay of the land. Orlando is very flat, whereas Dallas appears to be quite hilly. These sample images can provide the instructor with the basis for exploring the geology and weather of these particular areas. You will need Apple Computer's Quicktime plug-in if you are not able to view these movies (167K in size).
