Half-Baked software has an excellent suite of six authoring tools. Hot Potatoes, enables the instructor to create six basic types of interactive web-based exercises; matching exercise, crossword puzzle, multiple choice quiz, jumble sentence exercise, jumble word exercise, and Cloze exercise. The exercises use JavaScript for interactivity, and will work in Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer versions 3 and above, on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. There is no charge for the software, available from the University of Victoria.
Although the software is easily managed, the exercises are constructed using JavaScript. You don't need to know anything about JavaScript to use the programs. All that is required is for the instructor to enter the data -- texts, questions, answers etc. The programs will create the web pages for you. You can post them on your web site. However, the programs are designed so that almost every aspect of the pages can be customized. So if you know HTML or JavaScript, you can make almost any change necessary to the manner in which the exercises work, or to the format of the web page.
Click on "Activity" to open a sample weather crossword puzzle constructed using one of the programs from Half-baked Software. The activity opens into a new window-when finished, close the window. |
