School District Staff Development Potential

On-line Assessments

Not many school districts develop and apply assessment instruments to determine whether the goals of a particular staff development workshop or program had any affect in changing the behavior of those who had been trained. I remember with great vividness the comment made to me one day by a teacher who was involved with a week long math/science workshop. This teacher didn't know I was the district's elementary science specialist and had made the arrangements for the workshop. The comment was "I would never implement this in the classroom. I took this workshop to get away from the kids." Needless to say I was appalled by the statement.

In the end, a staff development program should be designed to determine how the staff reacted to the training, and if any transference of knowledge had occurred. A method which can help organizations make decision in how a training program is working, is to employ instruments such as the sample below, to gather data in guiding the development of staff development offerings.

The second aspect of an assessment program is to determine if there has been any transfer of knowledge as a result of the instruction. Providing these assessments on-line provides a method to gather information anonymously. The sample on the next page is just one type of assessment to gather this information. These types of assessments need to be provided at least 6-7 months after the training has taking place.

The sample on-line survey listed below is part of a 32 question survey to determine the effectiveness of a workshop provided to a Florida School district in image processing. The survey addressed six factors found in a literature search that may have an impact on staff development. The first five questions addressed the participant's expectations. The second five questions are a re-statement of the questions provided to the participants at the conclusion of the workshop. It is important to provided a comment box at the end of the questionaire-this will allow the participants to write specific comments concerning any issues that may have arisen during the assessment.
