 Basic Browser Instruction

The activities in this workshop are designed to make maximum use of current information found on the Internet. Some of the information will be provided via remote sites. These remote sites will usually have links to other sites which contain similar information. This is usually good because you can deepen your understandings of the concept.

However, because this workshop uses images and information from other servers, there may be times in which the connections are running slow. When this occurs, click on the stop button on your browser. This will usually load the text but not the images. You can also hit the stop button if the page appears to stop loading. Then click on the reload button-this will usually help to clear up the stoppage.

For this workshop, links outside of this server will always open a NEW WINDOW. This procedure makes it convenient to close-out information from a remote server without having to continuously click the browser back button to return to the lesson site. If you need specialized help or want to review browser operations, the University of Illinois has an excellent on-line tutorial of Netscape 2.0 If you are using Internet Explorer as your browser, the tutorial is excellent in giving an overview of browser operations. Just remember that the browsers are similar, but not exactly the same.

Some of the activities will require participants to download information from remote sites to the computer. Make sure that there is a download folder for these files. These files will be in the form of .gif, .tif, mpeg, .avi, or QuickTime. When this occurs, viewing of the files can be off line. All .tif files are provided in a compressed format. TIF files are required in this workshop.

As part of your browser configuration, make sure that you have the appropriate QuickTime extensions in your plug-in folder. You will be viewing video and listening to audio files.

The technology will allow you to view video and audio streaming. In order words you can view real-time concerts radio shows and speeches without having to wait for the program to completely download to your computer.

This in-service was developed on a Macintosh computer and will look best on a Mac and in the Netscape browser. Macintosh and Window based machines display information differently. If Internet Explorer is used as the browser, it may also display these pages differently than Netscape. Therefore it may be necessary to change font size to view these pages properly. This can be accomplished by adjusting the browser preferences.

Hardware Requirements

The computer requirements for this course should include at least a 28.8 Kbps modem or faster, a minimum of 32 MB of RAM, and as fast of a computer which can be afforded. If you are using a computer with less than the recommended 32 MB of RAM, you may find that developing the animation sequence may be limited to a few images as compared to all 24. You may also find that your computer will be unable to complete some of the tasks because of the demands placed upon it. Your computer will also need to support multi-tasking, allowing you to run more than one program at a time.

Required Specialized Software

This workshop uses a number of different shareware, freeware, and commercial run-time software. To interact effectively with the activities of this workshop, participants will need the following:
